Tradition Planning More Retail

Once again, Tradition developer Core Communities LLC is kicking around big plans for its massive western community.

The latest: 350,000 square feet of shops and restaurants intermixed with offices and a large amphitheater for outdoor concerts.Village Pointe, as Core honchos are calling it, would be anchored by a discount department store and include five or six restaurants, said Alan Karrh, head of the company's commercial real estate division. A 110-room hotel is planned across the street.

The development -- the third big retail project on tap for Tradition -- is scheduled for a fall 2009 opening, and Karrh said it's too early to reveal tenants. But he emphasized Village Pointe won't detract from the 1.1 million-square-foot Tradition Town Center -- the nearby mall that Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-based Taubman Centers Inc. (NYSE: TCO) is planning to open by 2011 with Core.

"We're not going to go after the tenants that Taubman is going to go after," Karrh said. "We want Taubman to be wildly successful."
